Dimitri from Paris has been in Australia over the New Year period, once again proving his popularity with sell out shows across the country. On 26 January Dimitri will be launching "In the House" under the legendary Defected label. James Belias caught up with Dimitri to chat about Dimitri’s recording career.
When I last spoke with Dimitri, he was in New York remixing Incognito’s record ‘Morning Sun’, which has now made its way onto his new compilation for Defected called ‘In The House’. Dim will be returning to his second home in Melbourne, at Seven night club to rock Family to its core once more, on the 10th of January. As always, the man was in a talkative mood.
‘In The House’ has proven to be a great compilation series for Defected, free of the constraints of major labels. The series is definitely aimed at the clubbing-type experience, and Dimitri’s two CD’s sit nicely alongside mixes from Kenny Dope, Miguel Migs, Jay J, Sandy Rivera and others. “My release definitely fits into the series, and is pretty much club orientated. But at the same time, it is more diverse and covers a broader spectrum. The clubbers will like it and the casual house listeners will also find it enjoyable. I think it crosses over to non-house listeners nicely, but also people like me, who are house music nerds will also be able to enjoy it”.
Dimitri’s popularity as a DJ and indeed the amazing popularity of the Night At The Playboy Mansion release caused unprecedented ‘issues’ for the man when behind the decks. In short, he’s well aware that a lot of people still want to hear the music from the CD’s he’s released. “It’s a delicate issue, you see, because these are the people that have paid all their money to come to the club and to hear me play because they enjoy the music. Sometimes I feel like ‘Well why don’t you go listen to the CD’, but I enjoy playing to everyone and if they’re all smiling and singing and dancing then that is good for everyone. People don’t come to the club to go to class, they come to have fun.”
The pairing of Defected Records and Dimitri From Paris seems a good one, as both names are synonymous with quality house music. “We are basically both helping out each other. I have a lot of respect from Simon Dunmore and Defected, because I know he’s not a new comer trying to cash in on the scene. He’s been DJ’ing for the last 25 years and started out a Northern Soul DJ. It was a great opportunity for me to do a house mix for an independent label. When I go to their office, its like everyone there is into the music and its unlike the major companies who are just focussed on money.”
