From skate punk roots to pioneering his own hard-to-define niche, Mark Pember AKA Meat Katie is world renowned UK DJ and producer heading to our shores later this month. His genre defying sound between house, breaks and techno with heaps of torque has earned the respect from all players in the dance industry. Fusing these elements of sound Meat Katie has launched Whole Nine Yards, his very own breaks label that embraces the 4/4 genres by stripping down and exploiting raw bass line. His unique trademark brand of breakbeat merged with tech-funk that takes influence from tech & tribal house, techno & electro, has transcended from subversive to subculture. Meat Katie's new album Destination: Australia in collaboration with EQ recordings, one of stomps sub labels delivers a four-to-the-floor break tech house assault that underground labels can only envy. Stage right to the Spanish Inquisition…
How did 'Meat Katie' originate?
I came across the name when looking at porn sites on the web! Titles of porn movies are great! I was looking for an interesting name that was chunky, plenty of substance, and I saw it…there…on the video box…MEAT KATIE…and I thought YESSS!
What's the 411 on Meat Katie?
I used to record for Wall of Sound under the name 'Ceasefire', that came to an end, so I went it alone and signed to Kingsize Records for a 3 album deal as Meat Katie nearly 8 years ago, I don't think I have ever looked back.
So before Kingsize Records, your previous affiliations were with Ceasefire. Why was there a drama with Wall of Sound?
It's unfair to slag people off in interviews, but let's just say not paying people or even accounting to artists is not good business practice.
Who have been your influences as an artist to become involved in the industry?
Soma, Dennis Brown, Trojan, Yoshitoshi, Prince, Underground Resistance, Rennie Pilgrim, too many to mention them all....
How would you describe your sound to those new in the breakbeat scene?
Straight edged rollin' tech-funk with a heavy breakbeat influence, you really need to hear it in a club for it to make true sense, (so I've been told!)
Breakbeat is definitely a genre that has been developed and challenged in the recent years. What do you feel is in store for the future of the scene?
I have no idea, that's why I like it so much, nobody knows what's gonna happen next.
How has the world related to Meat Katie and the Whole Nine Yards sound?
The Whole Nine Yards sound has ripped through the underground…swallowed it up and spat it out at the dreary corporate dance market. Production wise, it's pretty much as above, but with dirty house beats & techno also thrown into the mix, just for good measure!
After the phenomenal success of your third LP 'Beyond the Darkness', how do you feel about the launch of you new album 'Destination: Australia'?
I can't wait, but I'm very happy with the results.
Describe the album:
It's a different style of mix to beyond the darkness, a little deeper at some points, but lighter too, I would say it's more dynamic than the last mix, only the people who buy it will decide if that's a good thing.
What can Meat Katie groupies expect from your Australian tour?
Can't give too much away...can I? You need to see the circus yourself.
Any plans that we should scribble on our calendar for the near future?
As always I have plenty of plans, ideas, and general mischief to get into, I have loads of new music & remixes waiting for release later this year.
Which do you prefer being the most-DJ or Producer?
They go hand in hand for me now, if you had asked me a year ago I would have said producer, but I'm well up for playing out now.
Playing in the UK or overseas?
Not fussed, but Australia is always exciting for me, lots of friend out there now!
Old school or new school?
I never finished school so n/a!
Any tips for up and coming Aussie DJ's?
Don't be greedy, arrogant, and pretentious or slag off other scenes or DJ's coz that won't make you a better DJ or producer! I'm not really good with advice.
Complete this sentence: Meat Katie…
sells sea shells on the sea shore..?
See Meat Katie live in Australia supporting his album release with a national tour. For the next instalment of the Destination series, Meat Katie is set to pick-up where things left off after the bumpin' house mix from the H-Foundation lads, which was one of the outstanding mix compilations of last year. True to word, the series will provide another international artist the opportunity to provide a quality selection of music that the discerning listener and clubbers alike will have come to expect from a DJ that has graced the decks of Australian clubs on numerous occasions. Meat Katie once again delivers the goods and produces a compilation straight from the underground to a clubber's classic. So chunky you can carve it…
