.: if it ain't broken don't fix it too!
Date of Interview:  13 May, 2003

Marius Jones

Earlier this week I sat down with AKA (Artists Known As) label manager, Frank G to talk about their new album, If it ain't broken, don't fix it too. AKA has now seventeen releases and this new compilation of Australian breaks producers is their third CD release, out through Inertia Records.

The 100% recycled CD packaging is the first thing that catches your eye and the next attribute is the second disk…. but we'll get back to that later. The environmentally friendly CD has a look and feel of an underground product of Australian dance music where rules can and will be constantly bent. The cover, which is slightly larger than your average CD case, is essentially made from cardboard and cardboard alone. Just the two cut outs for the disks and the one-tone red ink designs make up this unique album cover.

As Frank continues, the selection of tracks has been written by Australian producers, all with outstanding talent, as you could quite easily be forgiven for thinking this was an import. In general, it represents where the breaks genre is at, in Australia but as you journey though the tracks you'll find electro, funk, breaks, nu skool sounds and plenty of beats!

The second CD is a mixed bag of tricks mixed up by Cairns DJ, Jeremy Judd. The smooth mixing from Jeremy compliments the album and does him proud to have won this kind of opportunity. More of this should be done. The idea is simple - support the supporters. The competition was to send in a DJ mix of the compilation. Jeremy's cd only used the first album of the series, so this gives you a good feel of the first two compilations of this series from AKA.

So what's next? Well number three is already underway with plenty of fresh tracks being produced this year. The next compilation shall be similar with a strong association to EEM (electronic emotional music). This term may be seen as the genre to stop all genres. The sense that music does move you and change your emotions shall be present without all the wank of trying to pigeon whole yet another Australian compilation. If you see this album on the shelves, give it a listen and tap into where breaks are at!
