When did Teriyaki Anarki Saki begin?
Teriyaki's first night was held on the 23rd May 1996 at a venue called Sadies. For more details on this and the rest of our club's life, check out our supa-fresh, newly constructed web-site: www.teriyakianarkisaki.com
Where did the name come from?
The name of "Teriyaki Anarki Saki" was coined in a series of light-hearted phone calls between Jason and Dee Dee about what we could name our new club. The original spiel was in fact more of a tongue twister: MISORAWSAUCYSAMURAI&KINKYKIMONOGEISHAFANTASIA present TERIYAKIANARKISAKI. Not very practical, but it stuck. The Japanese restaurant and our very naive but well-meaning fascination with Japanese culture in general, were the catalyst for such an unlikely brand. But the Anarki… well that's a more personal thing and it no doubt stems from our fierce determination to party hard our own way.
Who are the brains behind the event and what is the major music influence?
The two directors of Teriyaki are Jason Platts (DJ Slack) and Dee Dee. When it comes to making decisions, the buck stops with us. But we have a large band of loyal and trusted staff and we rely heavily on their advice when it comes to sounding out possibilities.
How has Yaki evolved since the days at HiFi bar & Billboards?
There have been many, many changes in this time. Obviously we have moved a number of times: from the Hifi to Velvet Lounge (number 2!) to Billboard and now onto our most recent home: ROOM. During this period we made changes regarding our resident line-up: the inclusion of DJ Pixleton (and the letting go of, which was a painful decision), the re-introduction of long-time resident DJ Slieker and the welcoming on board of the fresh "new school" talents of DJ Disko Pussy. Musical taste and ways of delivering it have also changed: keeping a dance floor inspired and enthused is a great deal trickier than it seems (especially on a weekly basis) and all of our resident players work hard to keep it fresh and fun. Having to lose one of our favourite facets, the Penguin chill, was a major change: we have always liked to provide people with a different perspective, somewhere to relax and be more sociable. But perhaps the greatest evolution, and the most welcome one, has been with the way we approach the business in general: having done over 350 parties over 7 years has allowed (and sometimes forced!) us to confront all aspects more professionally.
ROOM680 is the new home, who shall be holding residencies?
In the main room you will see your favourite Tezza regulars: Dee Dee, Slack, Slieker and Disko Pussy. In the "new" Teriyaki chill will be resident hosts and players: Weaver and Chicken.
ROOM680 offers two spaces where different music can be played. Shall there be a chill-out room set up?
Yes there will be. As we mentioned above, the "chill" will be all systems go!
How often shall I be able to attend YAKI?
Teriyaki will be on the last Friday of the month (roughly every 4 to 6 weeks) These are the rest of our dates for this year:
Friday 30th May: Grand Re-opening. Friday 27th June: Teriyaki's great big f**k off 7th birthday bash. Friday 1st August Friday 29th August Friday 3rd October Friday 31st October Friday 28th November Friday 26th December: Teriyaki's great big f**k off Xmas Parti
Are you still keen on the idea of previewing live artists and international DJ's?
We are definitely very keen on both "Live" and international artists. Wherever we can we will always try to support both these modes as well as the great local talent we have here. It isn't so important to Teriyaki to have the biggest names, whether local or international: at the end of the day, we make decisions regarding who we bill (either live, local or international) based on if they can make a party rock.
What can punters expect on the 30 May, for the reopening?
If you haven't been to Room yet, that in itself is a sight to behold: it's a great venue which will be decked out with our trademark Teriyaki decor (refurbished and newly constructed by the great House of Scott) both in the main room and in the chill. On the main floor, Teriyaki's awesome foursome Dee Dee, Slack, Slieker and Disko Pussy will finally be able to let rip with their newest tunes, and in the new chill, known as Headmuff, expect to hear all sorts: from funky disco to downright demented. And keeping things even more entertaining, a flock of devious performances by The Tarts of Darkness, Hanzard (the tallest wizard around) and Star & Barbie Bliss.
What are your top 5 tracks that we shall hear at the reopening?
We can't answer that right now... It's less than a week to go and we intend to restock our boxes by opening night. You can rest assured that it will be the freshest tunes we can find.
If Yaki were a musical genre, what category would it fall under?
Funky but firm music to make you dance your ass off. |
