From the blazing sax introduction of disk one, John Course takes no prisoners. Together with co-Vicious Vinyl head Andy Van, he has mixed and compiled an awesome double CD A Night Out With Andy Van and John Course. "We aimed to get a reflection of what Andy and I do as DJ's", Coursey informs 12am. "It is as the title says, what you'd expect from a night of Andy and I playing".
CD 1 sees Coursey deliver house bombs with some big beats funky baselines and some amazingly killer vocals. Its what you expect from a John Course set, week in and week out. "I play at the moment up to 80% of the CD tracks each week at clubs. Because I play these tracks, I know the reaction they get each week, so I could accurately predict what the listener and buyer of the CD would enjoy".
With the club-styled format of this release, Coursey along with Andy Van select only proven club tracks. These are the records that the duo have dropped in their sets over the last year, and which have built on momentum. Whilst an awesome record like 'Flawless' by The Ones is still relatively new, other tracks on the compilation have literally been doing the rounds for a while. "A good example of that is 'Finally' by Kings Of Tomorrow", the man says. "First listen you think 'that's a quality record' but by the tenth time you say 'that's an amazing record'. That is why DJ'ing is so important with what we do with the label, because we see the reaction to the music, and we know what works and what doesn't".
This is the reason for the success of Vicious Vinyl's single releases to date. The duo also produces their own remixes of club-orientated tracks like King Unique's 'Look Ahead'. Essentially, they know how the tracks will be received. "Any DJ/producer will know who is going to play the track you are working on. This hones your skill, so when you make something, you know where it's going".
"If someone brings in a demo to the office we judge it on one criterion. We ask ourselves that if we were a record store, would we buy this. Ultimately, dance music is faceless. We don't care if the girl who is singing is good looking, or if the guitarist is amazing, the only thing that is important is whether a DJ would play it in a club, and if they would buy it if it was sitting on the shelves at DMC or Platinum Records".
John Course speaks like a man in the know. Voted into DJ Magazine's Top 100 DJ's he has certainly stamped his own unique style over the house music scene in Australia and indeed the world. Andy Van too, is no stranger to big projects. The two are certainly a formidable combination when it comes to combined sets and remixes, and this new release through EMI, provides the two with an opportunity to strut their wares in your living room or car en route to a big night out. "If you are about to go out and wanting to get into the zone, I think these disks do the job!"
A Night Out With Andy Van and John Course is out now through EMI. |
