.: Simon Coyle and Kazu Kamera
Date of Interview:  3rd May, 2001
Contributed by:
Andre Cato

Simon Coyle wears many hats, yet his head rarly has time to cool off. In between his successful dj career and co-running Agent mad, Simon has found time to not only mix up a storm on this new release cd called Sound Design and also found time for a chat with 12am.

Disc 1 : Bushcraft and Guerilla Tactics - Simon Coyle

This is your first commercial release, did Zomba come to you or the other way around?

Zomba came to me. I was lined up and ready to do a dj excursions elease through MDS but unfortunately as we know MDS folded. A lot of the staff and projects moved over onto the jive label which is a sub lable of Zomba, here in Australia. A mixed cd series was created and I was first of the list!

Is the name 'Bushcraft and Guerilla Tactics' relate to the drums and percussive tribal techno mixed up on your cd?

No I like the concept there, but unfortunately not. At the time the album needed a title, I was reading a couple of books on the Black war between the Tasmanian settlers and the Aboriginals. One part of the history is a 30-year era where the aboriginals were undefeated. They put this down to their bushcraft and guerilla tactics…. (My goodness, I was way left field on that one!)

When Sound Design was formulated were you thrown into a room with Kazu or did you bring separate mixes to the party?

Totally separate. Yeah we saw each others track listing and we worked out a few things, as we both wanted the same track at one stage. We both knew the two cd's would fit together as we play similar vibes with different tunes and styles of mixing. Kazu has a late Japanese style of mixing where as I have a more Melbourne 'drop it I' style I guess.

Any boundaries or restrictions on track selection?

Sure, you need licencing on all the tracks you mix, if the mixed cd is going to sit on the shop shelf. With the Australian dollar the way it is, I have used a lot of artists and connections I've made over the past decade, as a dj and the promotional manager at Agent Mad. Ben Sims is one of my favourite producers thus the three Ben Sims tracks, there is a track from Thomas Krome and Joel Mull both of which played at Welcome 2001, a James Ruskin track and a Surgoen track both of which played at Pure Flow 5, last September, 2000.

Any particular gear or effects?

Well I mixed this one up in my bedroom with the third deck about two feet away from the pioneer DJM600 mixer! I tried doing it out and about a couple of times, at seven and other clubs but something would always happen with the decks not working or something trivial so I thought I shall do it in the comfort of my bedroom. I mixed the tracks and then tried to better the mix by going over the tracks a couple of times but didn't sound as spontaneous so I used the original mix.

Is there a tour planned?

Yes I am going on tour starting tomorrow night doing guset spots, one on one and sets all over Australia over the next couple of months and you can read all about it on this great website called 12am.com.au!

Favoutite mix on the cd?

Agent Wood, by UK Gold over the top of Gaetano Parisio's Pain 23 (track 9 over 8) Mad percussions and vocals and it all just blends so nicely.

Where can we here you?

Dj Assult
Dave Clarke

At 12am we have followed Simon for quite a while now, listing his events and tours he produces with Agent Mad, one of Australia's leading dance tourning agents.

This cd once again proves Simon's talent and dedication to the Austalian Techno scene and we would like to thank him for taking time out to answer our questions.

Hopefully we will have a few signed exclusive copies of the Album to giveaway soon! Check it out in good music stores.

Thanks to Simon Coyle for the phone interview, Zomba records, and a certain telstra operator.
