How would you describe your sound?
Raucous, subtle, brain melting, emotional, uncompromising…
Describe how you got into producing dance music, and furthermore what made you choose hard house/trance?
By accident! Luckily, when we write dance music it just comes out that way! – We used to have an industrial band before LAB4!
How did you get involved with Annabelle Newman?
We met her at Sumo wrestling classes, she was the teacher and Lez and I made tea and sandwiches for the wrestlers…No (sorry) – Annabelle is my (Adams) little sister, we set up the One Inch label with her a couple of years ago and wrote the Fallen Angel tracks with her.
Which DJs or artists do you most respect in the dance industry at the moment?
It varies a lot, often obscure DJs/or producers that mange to come up with a blinding ‘one-off’ that leaves you inspired and dying to get back in the studio.
Where is your Djing career taking you at the moment?
Japan, Canada, Finland, Sweden, Holland, USA.
What’s your favourite club at the moment?
Anywhere where it’s loud and the crowd’s wild! – no favourites.
What music do you listen to when you take time out?
Everything from Nine Inch Nails to Ennio Morricone to Korn to Michael Nyman to The Venga Boys to Marilyn Manson etc.
What are you working on at the moment?
We have just set up a record label called "fragile" on which we will release Lab 4 stuff and "fragile house" which will be for dirty, cheeky, bouncy house and anything slightly more experimental that we might come up with. We have ‘slightly’ started work on our third album, which will be released around September next year. We have just finished a remix for an indie/rock band called Fith Amendment. Aside from that we have been gigging nearly every weekend for the last 2 years!
When will you be coming to Australia?
We are in Australia from about the 1st Nov. Les leaves around the 14th and Adam leaves on the 25th (staying for a holiday!!!!)
Current Top 5 (artist/title/label)?
RBA "no alternative" on Carnal
Warp Brothers vs. Aquagen "phat bass" on DOS OR DIE
Beretta " Bronx Boogy" lab4 remix on fragile house
The Captain & The Alien Thing "The Duster" on TinRib
Lab4 "Candyman" on One Inch
5 things you might not know about Lab 4?
We started Lab 4 in 1994
Our first ever gig was at The Ministry of Sound, our second was with Josh Wink and our third was with Carl Cox (both at Club UK for Universe/Tribal Gathering).
We have written music for worldwide advertising campaigns for companies such as Reebok, Bacardi and Polaroid as well as some classical music for the BBC.
A lot of the inspiration for us to write comes from visual stimulation (films = graphics etc.) rather than from other music.
5 things you should know about Lab 4?
…can’t think of five tings…One thing that has been quite frustrating for us is hearing from so many people for so many years that our music is so difficult to get hold of. Sadly, what people are given the opportunity to buy is decided by the buyer at the record shop or governed by whether that shop has an account with the right distributor or not. We have recently had our website (www.lab4.com) rebuilt so that early next year we will have an on-line fragile record shop where people will be able to mail order, by credit card, all the Lab 4 releases that either we have control of or are still being pressed along with more LAB4/fragile merchandise (clothing, video etc.) Hopefully this will help us to get our music out not only to the people who already want it but also on a much broader scale. |
