Son Kite - DJ Biography
|
 |
|
Behind the successful production of Son Kite stand Sebastian Mullaert and Marcus Henriksson. With different origins they got together 1996 and is today making a living of their excellent production from the High-Hat Studio in Malmoe, Sweden.
Their backgrounds are an important fact that is today defining their style as producers. Sebastian started out learning the organ at the age of 8 which also later led him to taking piano lessons. Still at the organ he took up learning the violin at the age of 9 and these two instruments followed him through years of playing in different ensembles, taking lessons in other instruments, giving lessons in his main instrument - the violin etc etc. So til the age of 17 he was walking the path of a classical musician. Then his acquaintances led to the formation of DIM, a popband where Sebastian was playing the violin using effects to create a sound that resembles the electronic sounds he's making today. After 3 years and two demotapes recorded the diffrence in ambition between the bandmembers led to a split up but then Sebastian had already made his way into the electronic music....
Marcus was never into the side of music that is playing instruments and such but he was very much into listening to music and had from the day he bought his first record been into electronic music. Making his way through Kraftwerk, Human League and such he stopped at synth and stayed there til his first technoparty in the beginning of the 90's which of course changed all of it. He started by buying 12"s and making mixtapes to friends at school who wanted to hear this new music and went on from there to be playing out, first as resident at the parties he was involved in promoting and then from the reputation he gained, at parties all over the south of Sweden. It was in this environment that he first met Sebastian but at this stage they "only" remained friends only to get together one year later to combine the forces of Sebastian's musical knowledge and experience from all kinds of music with Marcus experience of electronic music through being a dj and deeply involved in the techno scene. So here starts what later turned out to be a very good cooperation!!
They started out with some simple stuff that was tried out in
Marcus' dj sets, which became a very important source for feedback that nourished their development. With acquired experience they got some pretty good tracks together under the project name Trimatic, and these were pressed as a whitelabel for promotion and a little sendout was made but neither the music or the labels were ready for eachother.
In the summer of 1998 a new project, Son Kite, saw daylight and with some tracks ready they played live for the first time in Copenhagen and the response was overwhelming! Fueled by this experience a new sendout was made to finf a distributor to their own label, Baluns, but instead of a distributorcontract, a recordlabel called and were more than thrilled by this new sound and the beginning of the successful Son Kite was a fact and this you can see in their releaseoverview below!!
Live performance
Today widely known for their music, Son Kite has a reputation for a rocking liveact. With a lot of work, investing and constant development to have something different going, this is something they really deserve.
The first liveperformance was made in the spring of 98' at a party they promoted themselves and back then it was a story of bringing the whole studio to make the liveact, which was of course a lot of work. Not wanting to just press play on a DAT player they continued like this making one more liveact but then decided that they had to change to make it more interactive and convenient.
After some brainstorming the concept was ready; a Fostex 16 channel digital multitrack recorder, two multieffects, a Pioneer cd player and a Numark dj mixer. But how were they going to use this...
By dividing the tracks they wanted to play live into 16 ingredients, loop them in the sequencing program, and then recording them one by one on separate channels for 12 minutes on the Fostex, they could play these tracks on a mixing console using effects as they pleased and most important arrange the tracks as fit for every occasion. But then since trance is not a rock concert, empahsis was also put on the fact that they didn't want pauses between the tracks and also because some tracks are better played in their original arrangemen, they deceided to play one track live, one track cd, one track live and so on....and the whole thing was to be beatmixed by Marcus which make them avoid the breaks and gives the whole act more flow. And most important this equipment was something they were able to bring everywhere to perform their liveact, without having a private jet.
With this gear they have played numerous events and always very appreciated. The way they perform permits them to adap to the audience and it emits a vibe of credibility when people realize that the activity on stage is actually a unique version of a track. For the future they are planning a new liveperformance to have more possibilities in changing and doing something different, but this is something we leave for you to know about when it's ready... |
