SEATTLE SONGSMITH LAURA VEIRS IN AUSTRALIA THIS WEEK
Acclaimed Seattle song smith Laura Veirs impressed many a critic and record buyer with last years Carbon Glacier album. Released in 2004 to gushing reviews including 5 stars from Uncut magazine, Veirs established herself as a true talent bound to stand the test of time. Born at the edge of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, Laura Veirs grew up exploring the water, snow, stars, and craggy peaks of the American West. Her first record, The Triumphs and Travails of Orphan Mae (2000) caught the attention of the Bella Union label who then released Trouble By The Fire (2003). That album saw the young songwriter pulled from obscurity to become one of the most promising artists to emerge in the new century. The following year Laura Veirs released Carbon Glacier- an album of astonishingly well-crafted and bittersweet songs. Backed by haunting soundscapes, these winter laments reference shipwrecks and snowstorms, chimney sweeps, and mortality in dreamy stream-of-consciousness style lyrics. Unlike many who carry the 'singer-songwriters' tag, Veirs actually writes really great songs. Produced by Tucker Martine of Modest Mouse, the album was licensed in the U.S by the notoriously selective Nonesuch records, home to Wilco and Brian Wilson. Joining her on her first Australian tour are Steve Moore (trombone, keyboards) and Pacific North West institution Karl Blau (bass, guitar) - frequent collaborator and mentor of The Microphones/Mt Eerie.
Tour dates: Thursday 26th May – Northcote Social Club, MELBOURNE Friday 27th May – The Basement, SYDNEY Saturday 28th May – The Troubadour, BRISBANE Sunday 29th May – Manchester Lane, MELBOURNE

So Not… VIETNAMESE PAPER ROLLS Too weird for my taste buds and I’ll eat ox tail!
HD- I understand you said if I received ‘High Distinction’s‘ straight away it wouldn’t give me something to strive for but it’s the maintenance of that grade that I’m so good at!
PARKING IN THE CITY Who brings change with them anyway?!
TIRED SO TIRED Is it just me or does anyone else feel gluggy with this weather?
CANDLES That goes off while you are and nearly sets the bedroom on fire! Oopsy daisy!
So What…
These are entries to a Washington Post competition asking for a rhyme with the most romantic first line but .... the least romantic second line:
Love may be beautiful, love may be bliss But I only slept with you, because I was pissed.
I thought that I could love no other Until, that is, I met your brother.
Roses are red, violets are blue, sugar is sweet, and so are you. But the roses are wilting, the violets are dead, the sugar bowl's empty and so is your head.
Of loving beauty you float with grace If only you could hide your face.
Kind, intelligent, loving and hot This describes everything you are not.
I want to feel your sweet embrace But don't take that paper bag off of your face.
I love your smile, your face, and your eyes Damn, I'm good at telling lies!
My darling, my lover, my beautiful wife: Marrying you screwed up my life.
I see your face when I am dreaming. That's why I always wake up screaming.
My love, you take my breath away. What have you stepped in to smell this way?
My feelings for you no words can tell Except for maybe "Go To Hell".
What inspired this amorous rhyme? Two parts vodka, one part lime.

"According to a new survey, women say they feel more comfortable undressing in front of men than they do undressing in front of other women. They say that women are too judgmental, where, of course, men are just grateful." Robert De Niro
